Pirates!
Just finished watching Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At worlds end. Well done movie which raps up the trilogy nicely. I was highly impressed with how the film opened. While seeing bodies, upon bodies, of pirates who have been hanged, a company man reads an order to the public stating that rights of habeas corpus and all freedoms and liberties associated with it, have been suspended, all people suspected of being or aiding a pirate are to be executed immediately. We watch a group of men hang, and see long lines of people awaiting their turn to die. A young boy is brought forward and with noose around his neck, he begins to softly sing, slowly other in the line begin to sing as well, until all the people waiting to be executed are singing loudly. It was a brilliant scene and a good movie. I Recommend seeing this film. What are your thoughts on the song, scene, and movie?
Edit: Heather left a link to download a version of the song that is longer than the one on the soundtrack, please note that it is not a ‘full version’, but it seems it is the longest one available. Download the extended version of Hoist the Colours here. Credit for the Original upload goes out to Wesker/Amesome-x. Thanks!
Edit 2: A lot of people have also been asking about the extra, after credits scene. Download the PotC3 after credits scene here. Credit goes of to Zemerick, from imperiuminferi. Thanks!
Edit 3: Thanks goes out to Revan for proving this Mp3 of Elizabeth’s verse.
Edit 4: Thanks to Frankie for this Combined ‘Full’ Version. Right click and save as.

Here are the “Hoist the Colours” Lyrics.
Yo, ho, haul together,
hoist the Colors high.
Heave ho,
thieves and beggars,
never shall we die.The king and his men
stole the queen from her bed
and bound her in her Bones.
The seas be ours
and by the powers
where we will we’ll roam.Yo, ho, haul together,
hoist the Colors high.
Heave ho, thieves and beggars,
never shall we die. Some men have died
and some are alive
and others sail on the sea
– with the keys to the cage…
and the Devil to pay
we lay to Fiddler’s Green! The bell has been raised
from it’s watery grave…
Do you hear it’s sepulchral tone?
We are a call to all,
pay head the squall
and turn your sail toward home!Yo, ho, haul together,
hoist the Colors high…
Heave ho, thieves and beggars,
never shall we die.

hehe, the first time i heard the song i was like “man, this song has something to do with the theme” then once i kept watching it i got what the song means, a really good end to the trilogy, and a scene i like a lot is where yack is sailing in the dinghy[dont eremnber how is written] with the charts looking for that sunken boat, so neat, by the way, there is a scene in the beggining, where they are in singapur, jack the monkey start playing a machine that has a wicky song, do someone knows what song was that? because i was checking the subtitles of the movie and it says “choirs and colors” and im not sure how true is that:P if someone knows, mail me please, my mail is erickprimero@hotmail.com
Hi Frankie,
I tried downloading the version of “Hoist the Colors” that you created/mixed. Every time I tried, it just took me to this completely unrelated html page. Would it be possible for you to send me the version you mixed of the song? Do you have it in mp3 format? I’d really appreciate it. Thanks so much!

Hi! I just wanna say that POTC 3 is the best movie ever!!! Well besides the Lord of the Rings.. cause I’m a devout fan to LOTR!!! And Howard Shore is a freaking good composer!!!!
I’ve been looking forever for the full version of Hoist the Colours… and I couldn’t download the one Frankie put on here!!! A website about dating single Baltic women came up.. and honestly, I’m not interested!!!
So if anyone can help.. please do!!! My e-mail is Rudezy@gmail.com (How original)!! Hopefully someone still reads this and replies
Frankie, I tried to add you on msn!!!
Here is my translation/interpretation of the lyrics/song (although the chorus is rather self-explanatory, so I didn’t bother with it):
The King & his men [pirate lord & his men]
Stole the Queen from her bed [Calypso]
And bound her in her bones [bound her in human form]
The Seas be ours [in her human form Calypso is separated from the sea]
And by the powers [thus man (can attempt to) control the sea]
Where we will, we’ll roam [we'll go wherever we so choose]
Yo ho, all hands
Hoist the Colours high
Heave ho, thieves and beggars
Never shall we die
Some men have died [either this first line is referring to the original pirate lords or these first three lines are simply referring to the passing of time]
And some are alive
And others sail on the sea
With the keys to the cage [9 Pieces of 8 - the keys that, when united, etc., release Calypso from her human bonds]
And the Devil to pay [Calypso's wrath]
We lay to Fiddler’s Green [lay (course) to Fiddler's Green: pirates realized they weren't welcome in the tradition Christian Heaven, so they came up with their own version of the afterlife and dubbed it "Fiddler's Green."]
The Bell has been raised ["song has been sung", the alarm has been sounded, the hour is upon them]
From its watery grave [dreaded hour, a dreaded issue, they had hoped to leave it buried and never deal with it again]
Hear its sepulchral tone? [sepulchral = funereal; a funeral song, a funeral tune]
A call to all [a warning to all]
Pay heed the squall [heed the coming storm]
And turn your sail to home
Yo ho, haul together
Hoist the Colours high
Heave ho, thieves and beggars
Never shall we die
The lyrics here are exactly as they are sung in the movie, hence why a few words have been left out here and there (as opposed to what has been previously posted)
To better understand these lines:
“lay to Fiddler’s Green,”
“the Bell has been raised,” &
“pay heed the squall”
refer to the lesser known definitions below.
lay:1) to bet or wage
2) nautical: to head in a specified direction; (ex. “lay west…;lay to the north
so, “lay to Fiddler’s Green” could be the wager the pirates are taking in releasing Calypso – if they don’t release her she can’t kill them all, if they do release her, however, chances are she’ll at least attempt to kill them all.
OR, more likely
they believe her wrath will be so great that in releasing her they are sentencing themselves to death, so they might as well “lay (course) to Fiddler’s Green”/”set sail to Fiddler’s Green”
(Fiddler’s Green = pirate’s version of the afterlife)
NOTE: In PoTC: At World’s End, the idea of the flash of green light was inspired by “Fiddler’s Green”, not the other way around.
bell: 1) to utter long, deep, resonant sounds; bellow
2) nautical: a stroke on a hollow metal instrument to mark the hour
so, “the Bell has been raised” – the alarm has been sounded…
OR
the hour is upon them, “from it’s watery grave” – a long awaited (and dreaded) hour.
squall: 1)loud, harsh cry
2) short, violent storm characterized by sudden and violent gusts of wind
so, “pay heed the squall” could be the song of the Pieces of Eight – the song is a warning, heed it…
OR, more likely
note the coming storm (Calypso’s wrath) and “turn your sail to home” – because no sane sailor wants to be caught on the sea when Calypso strikes.
A beautiful song and a brilliant movie. Hope my translation/interpretation was helpful/insightful.
’til later,
Sarah
*CORRECTION on my translation posted just above:
The King & his men [pirate *king and his men aka the first Brethren Court]
The last time the chorus is sung, it is actually sung:
Yo ho, haul together,
Hoist the Colours high
Heave ho, *thief and *beggar
Never *say we die
Although, I do believe if Elizabeth had continued to sing, rather than having been interrupted by Tai Huang, she would have sung the written version:
Yo ho, haul together
Hoist the Colours high
Heave ho, thieves and beggars
Never shall we die
Sarah
Hi to you all,
I’ve been searching the entire web for any full version of this great song and finally, after a long disappointing search, I’ve decided to make it myself.
I’ve used an audio-editor to mix 2 different versions of the song. I’ve used the original soundtrack to mix with an acappella song of a girl called An Trang (found on YouTube).
In my opinion the remix worked out quite well.
For those who are interested or want to use it, feel free to grab it at:
http://users.skynet.be/dubbleeagle/temp/Hoist The Colours remix.mp3
Maybe an idea for someone who has more experience with audio-editing and someone with an even better voice to make their own version and spread it out???
Many greatings from a fellow Pirate
Hi
Thank you to everyone who has commented about this song and helped me to understand it as well as the film. Thank you also for the tunes.
Michael.
I did the same thing.
I’m very good with audio editing programs I just have none at the moment.
I originally made the song for the people on this site.
If you looked you would of found it.
I used gold wave back then.
I made a newer version with An audio editing program that cost me abotu 393 dollars.
But on my way back home from Halifax my computer got fried in a rain storm and my disc for thr program as well.
I found the song I made a while back.
I’m also in the process of recording the song with people.
I may do it with my band or with some internet mates.
I don’t sing well(lisp) but I can sing like Manson and others well enough.
If anyone needs the original and would like to look into the process and how far along I am with the song.

Email me.
I just noticed a typo with the lyrics: In the phrase (pay head the squall)what is actualy said is (Pay HEED the squall) as in pay attention to where storms are set; whether they’re natural storms or in the form of an E.I.T.C. raid!
hi ive had hoist the colours in my head for days
i want the piano sheet music can anyone help me out
i know i can go on youtube but this isn’t my internet so i can’t use it to learn the song
This movie is one of my favorites. I’ve been singing Hoist the Colours for a week now.
have any of you seen the scene that takes place AFTER the credits. it’s sooo touching. in my opinion they should have that scene on scene selection on the dvd, but nooo, you have to sit through, what is it? like, an hour (exageration) of credits. it’s a really good scene though. the movie wraps up nicely, but that scene is just the icing on the cake. it makes it seem so much more complete.

website for hoist the colors sheet music
On the At World’s End soundtrack in the song What Shall We Die For you can hear them singing hoist the colours in the background
hay is anybody actually watched the movie the corus after the verse ‘the king and his men’ goes
yo,ho all hands,
hoist the coulors high
heive, ho, theives and beggars,
never shall we die,
then-
yo, ho haul together
hoist the coulors high
heive, ho theives and beggars,
never shall we die
so on and so fourth
“marrowbones” you are way of don’t mean to be rude but i have reasearched and it is right the way it is. if you had it the way it is it wouldn’t make sense, the talk about a squall of other words a coming storm ( old english) we are a call to all means we warn you see the storm turn away and hide like int he movie. You are incredibly of did you even hear Elizabeth sing in the Pirates of the Carribean At World’s End
I have found a long version of hoist the colours, if anyone wants it email me at dishman2102@yahoo.com and i will send it to you, it is 3 minutes 42 seconds long and is the best i have yet found. Got it off frostwire, took a long time (maybe ten minutes) to download, kept getting “waiting on busy host” and had to restart download 50+ time but the patient and persistant are rewarded. Anyway feel free to email me a request, and please be patient I don’t check my email every day or even every week, but I will get to you eventually.
Is there going to be a fourth film?
According to everything i find on the internet, there is going to be a fourth film. It is expected to be released sometime in 2011, as best as anyone knows.
